Gridiron great: Whittell alum Mike Crawford inducted into Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame

Mike Crawford fought incredibly hard simply for the opportunity to play college football at the University of Nevada, Reno. After a stellar career on the gridiron, the Whittell High alum now has a place in Wolf Pack lore. Crawford was inducted into the 2016 Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame class, announced by the school July 28.

South Tahoe's Bickert wins Heavenly duals in last TBSL race

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Maia Bickert ended her high school skiing career in a familiar place — atop the podium. The South Tahoe senior went out with a first-place finish in the Tahoe Basin Ski League duals race Wednesday at Heavenly Mountain Resort, earning the top girls' seed in time trials on the way to victory in her last event skiing for the Vikings.

Burroughs baseball plays with heavy hearts against Silverado

RIDGECREST — The Burroughs baseball team fell to Silverado 2-1 at Ed Dilley Field on Thursday — but that defeat was overshadowed by a greater loss. The Burros took the field with heavy hearts less than a day after the death of senior Daryan Robinson's mother, Kim Githens.

Sibling success: Patin brothers preparing to wrestle at CIF

Wrestling is synonymous with brotherhood - but not typically at the level Aaron and Jaelin Patin are accustomed to. The Burroughs wrestling team's siblings each qualified for the CIF-SS Eastern Division championships, and will take to the mat this weekend with a chance to advance to Masters.

Rachelle Schiller strikes way to Burros' single-season scoring record

When Rachelle Schiller has an opportunity to score, she almost always finds the back of the net. The senior forward has terrorized opposing defenses on her way to a single-season record number of goals for the Burroughs girls soccer team in the 2013-14 season.

Game of the Week: Poway at Helix

LA MESA – Poway has sought respect all season, and Friday against Helix in the Division II semifinals they definitively earned it. In a matchup of defending section champions, the third-seeded Titans took advantage of mistakes and controlled the line of scrimmage to shut down the second-seeded Highlanders 21-7.

Mission Bay retires jersey of NFL star Arian Foster

PACIFIC BEACH – In his fourth season playing professional football, Arian Foster is now firmly entrenched as a legend at Mission Bay High. The Houston Texans’ rusher had his No. 2 jersey retired during halftime of the Buccaneers’ 34-12 loss to Point Loma Friday afternoon.

La Costa Canyon Wins Rematch Against Lincoln in State Regional Finals

ONTARIO – The high-stakes rematch between La Costa Canyon and Lincoln in the Division II Regional Finals on Saturday didn’t play out as either team planned, and it ended up going the Mavericks’ way. Top-seeded La Costa Canyon used a team effort to beat third-seeded Lincoln 47-43 at Citizens Business Bank Arena and advance to the state finals for the first time in school history.

LCC and Lincoln Meet Again, Make History in State Regional Finals

After La Costa Canyon edged Lincoln in the Division II section finals on March 2, the sentiment among both teams was that they would meet again in the state playoffs. That thought proved prophetic, as the Mavericks and Hornets navigated through the state tournament to set up a rematch in the Southern California Regional Finals on Saturday.

TALMADGE – Some of the best local teams and talent were on display at Hoover High on Monday at the eighth-annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Showcase. During the all-day event, top-ranked La Costa Canyon and second-ranked Hoover notched victories, Morse pulled off a defensive upset, and San Ysidro embraced the spotlight.

Sweetwater honors former star Michael Pitts

NATIONAL CITY – As Sweetwater’s basketball program looks to move forward this season, current players got a taste of past Red Devils success on Saturday night. At halftime of the Red Devils’ 62-53 loss against Morse, the school retired the No. 44 jersey of Michael Pitts, the 1979 CIF Player of the Year.
