I'm Ray Nimmo, a writer in Hampton Roads who currently works as an editorial assistant in The Virginian-Pilot sports department.

My beats are high school volleyball, swimming and girls soccer in addition to my normal administrative duties (taking phone calls from coaches, transcribing box scores, compiling agate and roundups, editing proofs), I also cover other sports and help manage our department's Twitter page (@757teamz) - one of the most followed high school sports handles.

In the years ahead, I hope to grow as a journalist, covering increasingly high-profile teams and athletes. From high school to college and professional, every level has something to offer and teach. I'm eager to learn.

First state tourney, first state title for Princess Anne

RICHMOND Chase Howard, Kyle Barnes, Alec Smith and Garrett Long raised triumphant arms toward rushing teammates. The Princess Anne boys volleyball team was as in sync during celebrations as they were during their state championship win. The Cavaliers swept Cox 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 Friday at the Siegel Center to win the program's first boys volleyball state title in its first state tournament.
