Theatre precinct at UNSW to be named after local Indigenous artist and community elder

The name of the new arts facility at UNSW Sydney pays tribute to a renowned Indigenous artist whose work connects her ancestral history and art to the broader Australian and Aboriginal communities. The precinct, formerly known as the D8 Theatres, will now be called the Esme Timbery Creative Practice Lab (ETCPL), or 'the Esme' as students have nicknamed the space.

Behrouz Boochani appointed adjunct associate professor at UNSW

Kurdish-Iranian refugee and award-winning writer Behrouz Boochani has been appointed adjunct associate professor in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at UNSW Sydney. The appointment will see the human rights defender participate in events and lectures through the Forced Migration Research Network.

Finding help in the city: professor advocates for the world's urban refugees

There are more refugees today than in any time since World War II. The United Nations Refugee Agency estimates that of the 70 million or so people who have been forcibly displaced from their homes, 23 million are refugees - people who have fled their home country due to factors including violent conflict, environmental and climate issues, human rights violations and famine.

Rebel Wilson accepts UNSW alumni award for achievements on and off the big screen

Hollywood actress, writer and producer Rebel Wilson returned to UNSW Sydney on Thursday to accept the Chancellor's Award for Exceptional Alumni Achievement in front of an intimate audience in the Io Myers Studio. Wilson is the second recipient of the Chancellor's Award, which was established in 2018 to celebrate the exceptional achievements of a UNSW alumni with demonstrable success across a broad range of fields and interests.

Title IX: Local high schools work to bridge achievement gap

While girls consistently outdo boys in reading, female students seem to still struggle to keep up in math and science. Although girls and women have made significant progress in the 40 years since the introduction of Title IX -- the law that prohibits educational programs that receive federal funding from discriminating on the basis of sex -- students and educators say more work is needed to truly level the playing field.

Reform would bring uniformity to sex ed class

Confused about sex education in our schools? So are some legislators and pro-life groups. House Bill 3027 will not rewrite sex education in the state. Instead, it strengthens existing language, said state Rep. Camille Lilly, a Chicago Democrat and the lead sponsor in the House. Still, some say what's included in those lessons varies widely.

Analysis looks at suburbs' top-paid teachers

The two highest-paid public school teachers in the suburbs made about $190,000 in the 2009-10 school year, the final year before they retired. That's $190,000 each. The top-paid teacher was a physical education teacher with 28 years as a high school football coach, while the runner-up was a high school English teacher who also led his school's theater program.

West Dundee fire lieutenant remembered for dedication

West Dundee Fire Lt. Thomas Lutzow was such a dedicated firefighter and paramedic that he would not leave the village to go out for dinner just in case someone needed his help. But relatives and colleagues of the longtime firefighter say his true calling was as an educator who loved teaching local children about fire prevention and safety.
