Dave Thorpe

Freelance writer/researcher

United States

I’m fresh off my post as the local sports editor at the Daily Breeze, a mid-sized daily newspaper in the South Bay area of Southern California. I planned budgets, coordinated coverage for breaking news, features, games and events, and did my share of writing and editing. I was with the Daily Breeze for more than 10 years.
Previously I was the sports editor at the Palos Verdes Peninsula News for eight years. At the time, the PV News, as it’s known, was published twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays. It was a great place to break into the newspaper business and learn the ropes.

The Los Angeles Kings have had game-changing goalkeepers in the team's history, including Rogie Vachon, Kelly Hrudey and Jonathan Quick. But who came closest to mastering the dubious act of becoming a great backup netminder? Who played the meanest second fiddle and complemented an exceptional No. 1 goaltender?

PV's Pat O'Brien had toughest battle out of the pool

Pat O'Brien coaches the boys and girls varsity water polo teams and teaches biology and marine biology at Palos Verdes High School. At age 31, O'Brien has already beaten cancer. He's young, athletic and full of energy. Perhaps that's why when O'Brien learned of his illness about one year ago, the news didn't faze him like it might most people.
