Is the Wedding Wow Factor Worth It?

Adding a spectacular or unexpected feature can help a wedding stand out. It doesn't have to break the bank, but it might come close. The first real fight with my fiancé since we began wedding planning last November started with a faux tree - one adorned with tea lights dangling from its big, leafy green branches.

An Underground Bar in the Columbus Circle Subway Station

Boite: Merchants' Gate Columbus Circle It's been nearly 20 years since Siberia, a dive bar inside the 50th Street station of the 1 line, left its home in the subway. (It later closed for good.) But now there's a new place to drink near the din of rumbling subterranean public transportation.

A Pink Bar on the Bowery With a Fashionable Brunch

Short Stories has a few tales to tell. The multiuse space, which was formerly Wise Men, opened in March and wants to become a Parisian-style brunch spot and a pop-up for rotating restaurants, along with its current incarnation as a late-night bar. It draws an energetic crowd of creative 20-somethings in dressed-up stilettos and oversize hoodies.

The Springs

Here's a fun game to play at the Springs: How many Hawaiian shirts can you spot in two minutes? On a scorching Saturday afternoon, we saw dinosaurs, palm trees and bright-green polka dots adorning the short-sleeve button-downs of Brooklyn bros at the 1950s Palm Springs-themed bar; one twentysomething went full-on frat star, wearing his completely unbuttoned as he sat solo soaking in the sun.

Inside NYC's first dog-friendly café

On a recent Monday afternoon, I walked in on some frisky action at the café Boris & Horton. "I have to leash Horton now because he's breaking the house rules," jokes owner Logan Mikhly about her eight-year-old dog's less than, uh, gentlemanly behavior toward a larger friend (some of the house rules are helpfully posted: mind the hormones and keep it classy).

Banzarbar

To explore Antarctica, Sir Ernest Shackleton had to live on floating ice sheets after his ship was trapped and eventually crushed by an ice pack. To get to Banzarbar, a Lower East Side speakeasy inspired by those 20th-century expeditions, one has to wander through a graffiti-tagged alleyway and wait on some floral couches.

Patent Pending

"Do you have a reservation?" asked the hostess standing in the back corner of a nondescript coffeeshop at 10pm on a recent Wednesday night. No, she wasn't guarding the $5 nitro brews; she was bouncing the speakeasy behind her, which she estimated had a 30-minute wait.

In order to get to the Blue Box Cafe, the new restaurant inside Tiffany & Co.'s Fifth Avenue flagship, you have to walk through the store's first-floor maze of black-jacket greeters, eager tourists and crystal-clear cases filled with sparkling rings, amping up your holiday adrenaline and simultaneously making you feel both posh and poor.

Barely Disfigured

"I'm sorry, what?" is the response you get when you mention Barely Disfigured. Named after a 1932 Surrealist poem by Paul Éluard, the cocktail bar's odd moniker is not made any clearer by the sentences etched on its front window: THIS IS NOT A BROTHEL. THERE ARE NO PROSTITUTES AT THIS ADDRESS.

A 19-year-old prodigy chef just opened his first NYC restaurant

Chef Flynn McGarry's $155-a-head prix fixe dining room is officially open today on the Lower East Side. The L.A.-native, who started hosting dinner parties inside his home at 12 years old, has worked in the Michelin-starred kitchens of Eleven Madison Park in NYC, Alinea in Chicago and Maaemo in Oslo, in addition to running his West Coast pop-up, EUREKA.

Fishbowl

It's surprising, to say the least: a Tao Group (Lavo, Marquee) property that is entirely devoid of block-long lines behind a velvet rope or smoke machines blasting hot fog amid flashing strobe lights. At Fishbowl, you'll find a welcoming bouncer, vintage pinball-game decor and a two-story aquarium in the middle of the retrofitted games lounge.

Ferris

What chef doesn't talk about her passion and craft? But so often that conversation translates into tedious, hard-nosed, by-the-book experiences: omakase replications straight from Tokyo or bolognese exactly the same as so-and-so's Sicilian grandmother's recipe. How refreshing, by contrast, that the dishes at Ferris are built on creativity.

Try sushi from a $323,000 tuna in NYC tonight only

Sushi Ginza Onodera has hooked anyone looking for the city's best sushi restaurant since it splashed onto the scene with its edomaezushi (aged fish sushi) in 2016. The spot earned two Michelin stars this year, an exceptionally rare achievement for a Japanese restaurant in New York City.

Julekake is the Christmas treat you didn't know you wanted

If heaven had a scent, it would probably smell a lot like Petee's Pies on the Lower East Side-buttery, cinnamon-y, carb-y. Set on bustling Delancey Street near the entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge, the exterior doesn't scream cozy, but once you step inside the tiny storefront, you're surrounded by both modern and vintage touches, with piled-up antique cookbooks, white tiled walls and potted plants on shelves.

Sugar East

Tucked away on an aggressively average block in the doorman-less part of the Upper East Side, a set of red-velvet ropes leads to a heavy black door. Push past it and descend a narrow, dimly lit staircase that stops at a full-length mirror right before the entrance.

Manhattan's invasion of Brooklyn is no secret: You can now wander off the Kings County side of the L and right into a SoulCycle or a Starbucks. And Elsa is yet another East River stowaway: After shuttering in Alphabet City in 2014, the bar has been reincarnated in Cobble Hill.

Diamond Reef

The setting doesn't scream tropics: a highway-facing stretch of Atlantic Avenue, sandwiched between Brooklyn Christian Center and a plumbing-supply company. But for its cocktail newcomer Diamond Reef, Attaboy's Michael McIlroy and Sam Ross padded the dimly lit, wood-paneled room with enough potted plants, palm-frond wallpaper and splashes of turquoise that it's easy to forget the barren, traffic-heavy street just outside.
